The Council of Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State Engr. Lawrence Danat, has inaugurated a 10-Man Committee to screen all teaching and non-teaching staff of the council’s Local Education Authority (LEA).
The chairman inaugurated the committee in the council Legislative Arm Chamber in the presence of council officials and staff.
THE NIGERIA STANDARD reports that the Committee is to be chaired by the Council Secretary, Hon. Sunday Yilkyes.
The LG boss gave the committee four weeks within which to complete its assignment and submit its findings and report to the council for quick action.
Danat explained that the setting up and inauguration of the committee became imperative inview of the huge financial burden on the council at paying the monthly salaries of the teaching and non-teaching staff in the LEA.
“This exercise is purposely to ascertain the actual monthly wage bill of Primary Education section as well as total number of schools and teachers and non-teaching staff.
“The huge monthly wage bill of the education section of this LGA is unacceptable and something drastic has to be done hence the inauguration of this committee today, ” he lamented.
The LG boss expressed hope that the exercise would yield positive results and restore sanity in the education sector.
Danat also expressed optimism that the exercise could possibly save some funds for the council which could be channeled to other aspects of the administration for the development of the area.
Responding on behalf of the committee members, Yilkyes thanked the chairman for counting them worthy for such an important task.
Yilkyes assured the chairman of their commitment and prudency at executing the onerous assignment in the interest and betterment of the area.
However, Mangu LGA has the highest number of teachers and schools on the Plateau estimated to more than 2000 teachers.
