The Sokoto State Government has signed a memorandum of understanding on initiative by the European Union /United Nations, which is an “initiative to eliminate violence against women and girls”.

The Governor of the state, Rt. Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal had during the ceremony expressed delight and also commended the security operatives in the state including the military for their effort in stemming security challenges in Sokoto and its environs.

Gov. Tambuwal also noted that poverty had always been in the forefront of major reasons for security/social vices in any community, whether it is rural, local, urban or mega cities.

He said following this development his administration has to ensure regular payment of the state work force to reduce poverty and subsequently deter social vices which include corruption and rape.

According to him, this informed government decision to collaborate with the military, police and other sister agencies to fight bandits, kidnapers, rapists and terrorists with a view to ushering in a good atmosphere for development to thrive in the state.

He also stated that for the first time the history of Sokoto State, three women have been appointed as members of the state executive council, “as commissioners purely to handle the poor idea relegating them to the back ground and ensuring their safety at all times”.

Earlier in his speech the Resident Humanitarian Coordinator of United Nations in Nigeria, Mr. Edward Kollon said the rate of poverty in Nigeria could be traced to the nation’s education, health, agriculture, social and political arenas, which he noted were at very alarming point.

He said that there was every need to build institutions purely for checking constitutions as this can lead to eradicating the passive exploding poverty in the country.

Kollon added that such institutions should be given free hand to operate and handle the compound insecurity, banditry and take such to the justice institutions.

He described Gov. Tambuwal as a friend and a brother to the United Nations development goal, who has been assisting the institution while he was in the National Assembly as speaker.
