Matthew 6:24-33 ‘No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. 25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? 26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? 27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? 28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: 29And yet I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore, take no thought, saying, what shall we eat? or, what shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof’
The Gentiles make seeking these things their primary priority but you don’t do like the gentiles. You don’t do like a people who don’t know God or a people who have no covenant with God. You don’t make what you eat, drink or wear the primary issues that drive you in life. The driving force of every believer is to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all the things that the gentiles seek will be added to you. Seeking first means it is an issue of priority.
We have defined the kingdom of God to be
1) God’s dominion on the face of the earth. It is the place where God establishes his rule on the earth.
2) Secondly, the kingdom of God is God’s way of doing things. God has his demands concerning the way believers should live. He has a way of doing things. Knowing the person of Jesus will ensure you his joy and peace, because his joy and his peace is dependent on your personal fellowship with him. However, you can know the person of Jesus and enjoy his joy and peace but yet if you do not know his principles, you may not enjoy his prosperity. We have to go back as believers to God’s way of doing things.
3) The third definition of the kingdom of God is also God’s economy.
God has an economy he is running. In the natural, when we talk about economics, we refer to money, the translation of money into goods and services and material things. So in the world, economics is limited to money and material things but God’s economy is not limited to money and material things.
His economy is his kingdom and inside of his economy is everything that satisfies the needs of humanity. Man’s needs are diverse. He has spiritual, emotional, mental, physical, relational, financial needs, etc. and God has everything required to meet his needs. God’s economy has the ability to fulfil you in every area of life.
This is what Jesus was talking about and it is knowing how God does things that connects you to that economy. I believe with the whole of my heart that this is where the church has missed it. God has to come and become first again on our itineraries and our agendas.
A kingdom is a place of dominion and every one of us is a king in that kingdom. He is called the king of kings. He has given every one of us a place of dominion, where we can exert out influence on the face of the earth. Your kingdom is that which God’s kingdom has apportioned to each one of us to represent him on the earth. You don’t have to look too far to find your kingdom. Where are your talents and your gifts?
Everybody has something that God has invested in them to advance the kingdom of God. Our business is to take what God has given us with only one thing in mind and that is to maximise or allow what he has given us to have the highest expression for the sake of the kingdom of God. When your heart ticks that way, substance or material things will not be a problem because they were designed to follow us.
We are the children of the king. Money, cars, houses, influence, favouretc were designed to follow us. We don’t go after these things but we go after the plan of God for your lives. If we make that the priority in our lives, everything else will follow. Not only will it follow but we will have the double benefit of having influence on the face of the earth. That means that when we speak, heaven responds to us.
That is God’s plan. Make it a priority to find what God has invested in you and develop it for the expansion of his kingdom. Spiritual influence is real. Don’t allow pressure to push you into acting like a natural man or to lose your focus. You mean something to God. You are his child and are connected to his kingdom. God is always moving for us but we cannot step out of the spirit and begin to move in the natural.
Let us look at what Paul said to the Galatian church in Galatians 3:1-3O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? 2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?’
Jesus said again in John 6:63 ‘It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.’ The flesh simply means a way of thinking that is not consistent with the will of God. Jesus said, that the flesh does not profit anything but his words are spirit and they are life.
Let us look at how the church in the new testament reacted to physical persecution. Acts 12:1-5‘Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church.2 And he killed James the brother of John with the sword. 3 And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.) 4 And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people. 5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.’
Peter was not a soldier but an apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ in the natural. All his credentials were spiritual but when they went to arrest him and to keep him, they used hundreds of soldiers. We can see that it is possible to exert such weight in the spirit realm that will bear in the physical.
According to this scripture prayer was made without ceasing for him by the church. The people of God were vexed because the government of the day oppressed them but they knew they had something. Prayer was not a religious act to them. Instant and earnest prayer was made for him. Instant means readily available and earnest means it was fervent.
Prayer was a readily available source of power to the people of God. They had mastered operating in the realm of the spirit and it was so real to them. They knew they could draw power down. So when they were vexed or any believer was touched, the first thing they did was not mass action but prayer because they were skilled in drawing down the forces of heaven.
The reason many believers are not fervent in prayer is because they do not really believe in prayer and they do not believe because they do not really see prayer working. We must begin to pay attention to what we have or else we will lose it or it will seem like prayer has no power. As you pay attention, you gain skill in it and it becomes more useful in your hands.
