Governor Simon Bako Lalong of Plateau State has been conferred with an award for his immense contribution to the development of the Conference of Former Speakers of state houses of assembly in Nigeria. The occasion was held at Sheraton hotel and towers Abuja last Friday, according to our correspondent.
Gov. Lalong who is the current Chairman of the group urged them to continue to lend their voices to various issues in the nation’s polity in order to ensure that the democratic culture is deepened, so that the country would truly experience development.
“Thankfully, many of us have since leaving office as speakers moved on to other political positions either as federal legislators, ministers, governors, ambassadors or other areas of service in the public and private sectors where our knowledge at the state Houses of Assembly came in handy”, Lalong said.
He further told them not shy away from their contributions towards national discourse such that relate to strengthening the state Houses of Assembly, adding that, his state; Plateau was enjoying the synergy and collaboration due to his experience as a former speaker and now governor.
Gov. Lalong said the conference does not include deputy speakers as the body was registered and urged members of the Conference to use the forum for the progress of each other instead of bringing down themselves down.
Earlier in a welcome address, Hon. Friday Itulah congratulated the awardees, adding that the Conference is need of a secretariat amongst other needs.
Hon. Itulah charged those elected as governors, legislators at the National Assembly and those selected as ministers to make invaluable contributions to the growth and development of the country.
Our Correspondent reports that the Minister of Transportation, Hon. Rotimi Amaechi and Governor of Adamawa State, Hon Ahmed Fintiri were among other awardees at the occasion.
