As part of efforts to reduce the pains being encountered by civil servants after retirement from active service, the Nasarawa State government, in collaboration with the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) is training 1000 local government workers who are nearing retirement from service.
Declaring the 5-day training opened at the Assembly Hall of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Governor Abdullahi Sule said the move was in line with the policy objectives of his administration aimed at creating job opportunities, not only for the retirees, but for all the unemployed citizens of the state.
“The tremendous benefits to be derived by the participants are enormous which will make the life of the would-be retirees productive after their service”, Governor Sule said.
The governor stressed that the training is also in tandem with objectives geared towards wealth creation, employment generation and economic empowerment.
He said: “It is for this reason that this administration is resolved to continue to synergize with appropriate institutions in order to create jobs through capacity building, vocational and skills acquisition programmes for the retirees and other segments of the society”.
“The training workshop packaged by the Nasarawa State Local Government Service Commission (NSLGSC) in collaboration with the National Directorate for Employment (NDE) is expected to train selected one thousand (1000) participants from across the Local Government Councils and Development Areas of the state who are exiting the service after thirty-five (35) years of service to the state” he explained.
The governor also used the opportunity of the occasion to reiterate the resolve of his administration to accord training and retraining of workers priority attention in government vowed to reinvigorate the state public service for effective service delivery.
“This resolve is anchored on our conviction that the public service remains the most effective vehicle for the implementation of government policies and programmes for socio-economic development” he further explained.
Earlier in his welcome address the Chairman of the Nasarawa State’s Local Government Service Commission Barrister Mohammed Sani Bawa stated that the training programme which is for all the retired and retiring staff of local governments across the state was aimed at making them active even after living their services.
He expressed his gratitude to both the state government and the National Directorate of Employment for partnering with them towards the success of the training programe.
In his remarks the National Chairman of the National Directorate of Employment thanked the state government for their synergy and support to his organization and pledged more support and cooperation.
