Local government Councils in Nasarawa State have been tasked to step up effort towards improving their internally generated revenue (IGR) to enable them meet up with their over increasing financial challenges as regards running the affairs of their responsibilities.
The Special Adviser to the Governor of Nasarawa State on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. John Maman Waje gave the charge while speaking with newsmen in Keffi about the activities of the local councils, recently.
He said, Local government councils in the state should as a matter of necessity strive to beef up their revenue generation capacities in view of the re- occurring financial challenges and demand for services from their people as well as the dwindling revenue from the federation account.
“The best way out for local government and indeed all arms of the governments is to look onwards to shore up their internally revenue generation capacities or base with a view to enabling them live up to their responsibilities and expectations of their people” Mamman stated.
The special adviser also advised the local government councils to always ensure prudence and accountability in the management of the available resources at their disposal adding that they should channel them into projects and programs that would improve the socio-economic well-being of their people.
He further reminded them that they should always put it at the back of their minds that public office is a public trust as such they should endeavor to uphold the trust and confidence reposed in them by their people as it is the only way they should be able to live up to their responsibilities with them.
His words “It has become highly imperative for the managers of the local government councils to endeavour to uphold the public trust bestowed upon them by their people through justice, fairness, equity and accountability with a view to continue to earn their support and confidence”.
He then expressed his gratitude to President Mohammadu Buhari and Governor Abdullahi A. Sule for their passion and commitment towards the revitalization of local government areas, saying that such support would enable them to live up to the expectation of their people whom mostly are living in the grassroots.
The special adviser who was a retired permanent secretary in the state Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs assured that on their part they will render them all the necessary support and guidance to enable them succeed in the task ahead of them.
