The Amputee Coalition of Nigeria has, in collaboration with Dynamics Orthotics and Prosthetics Nigeria Limited and Arise and Walk Christian Ministry have concluded arrangement to supply over five hundred (500) amputees with artificial limbs to enhance their lives.

The one-day Amputees conference was held at the Azi Nyako Youth Centre, Dadin Kowa Jos, the Plateau State capital with participants from Bauchi, Maiduguri, Plateau, Nassarawa, Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna and Anambra States in attendance last Friday.

Addressing the participants, the representative of Progressive Prosthetics Orthotic UAS, Mr. Michael Arnett said, disability was never a disability unless one reduces him or herself to disability because there was ability in disability, encouraging them to think and belief in themselves.

On her part, the chairperson of Amputee Coalition of Nigeria, Barr. Florence Marcus, commended the Plateau State Government for establishing Disability Rights Commission which happened to be the first state to adopt and promised to partner with the government to improve amputees lives.

She, therefore, urged the government to always consider the plight of amputees by appointing them in key sections of governance and enjoined members to make them proud when appointed to serve in any capacity.

Also speaking Mr. Zingak Nengak, of Dynamics Orthotic, said, so far, they have produced and supplied over 70 to 100 limbs to amputees funded by an international organization, and that the limbs cost one million  but now sell at 2 to 3 hundred thousand naira and hoped that spirited individuals and government would help so that, more would be supplied to individuals.

Meanwhile, the Plateau State Governor, Barr. Simon Bako Lalong, represesnted by the Plateau State Executive Chairman, Disability Rights Commission, Mr. James Lalu, promised to use his office as the Chairman, Northern Governor Forums to collaborate with his counterparts in the North to assist amputees for them to have a quality life.

SUNDAY STANDARD reports that, this years theme of the Amputees Conference was, “Enhancing quality of life for Amputees in Nigeria” and the amputees were drawn from eight states of the federation.
