THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called for the review of laws governing the conduct of local government elections in Nigeria.

INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu made the call recently when he received forum of state Independent National Electoral Commission of Nigeria on a courtesy visit in his office.

While demanding for the financial autonomy of the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC), he also stated that the two issues were critical to the conduct of free, fair and credible elections at the local government level.

According to the INEC boss, while there was law establishing the state Independent Electoral Commission and its composition, each state had its procedures, regulation and guidelines for the conduct of local government elections.

Prof. Yakubu promised to maintain the partnership between INEC with the forum to ensure the conduct of credible, free and fair elections in Nigeria.

Speaking earlier, chairman of the Forum Justice Igbozuruike Akomas had disclosed that the Forum was it INEC Headquarters to facilitate the implementation of MoU and proposals made during the meeting between the two electoral bodies held in 2018.
