The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Monday tasked stakeholders and road users in Plateau on deliberate and drastic efforts toward reduction and eradication of road crashes in the state.
Deputy Corps Commander (DCC) Abubakar Sadiq, Acting Sector Commander, Plateau Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), gave the charge during the fund raising for the building of Parameter fence of the FRSC RS4.12 Pankshin Unit Command.
Sadiq said that the continuous wastage of innocent, energetic and patriotic citizens on “our highways must be stopped forthwith by making them (roads) safe.”
“All stakeholders and road users must rise to the challenge and be deliberate about reducing and eradication of road crashes on our highways, “ the sector Commander charged.
“Saving lives is the business and concern of everyone, and it behoves on all and sundry to live to expectation to avoid reckless driving and other activities that might lead to road crash, “ he stated.
The FRSC boss expressed gladness that Plateau has recorded some drastic fall in the number of road crashes and casualties on the highways particularly in the hinterlands.
He called for more enlightenment campaigns by stakeholders across the state about the dangers of overloading, speeding and drunk driving to continually bring down the number to the minimum.
The Sector Commander commended the Pankshin Unit Commander for considering the Security of his personnel a top priority hence the desire to construct a parameter fence round the Office of the Unit command.
Also speaking, Mr John Damap, Executive Chairman, Pankshin Local Government Area of Plateau, commended the immeasurable role FRSC has been playing at ensuring safety on the the highways.
Damap, who described the launch for the construction of the perimeter fence as “well thought-out” and “proper,” charged the command and its men “not to relent, but intensify efforts in living up to the objective of the Corps.”
“I have no doubt in my mind that the Unit Commander means well for his officers the host community considering the fact that he has constructed a well that the neighboring households benefit from it.
“There is every need to reward the Unit Commander, ACC Nnamdi Ikeh-Akabogu, for all his kind deeds in the command and community as a whole even as l believe history will be kind to him”, he stated .
The LG boss assured the command of his administration commitment to greater synergy and collaboration toward saving lives on the roads and rendering the needed assistance to it toward achieving its set goals.
He however donated N500, 000 on behalf of the 5 LGAs in the Plateau Central zone comprising Mangu, Bokkos, Kanke, Kanam and Pankshin for construction of the Parameter fence.
Earlier, Ikeh-Akabogu, explained that the idea for the perimeter fence came as a result of the prevailing security challenges in the country and its attendant danger to his officers.
“That was the same feeling l had when decided to construct a 100 seater capacity Lecture Hall for our lectures and public enlightenment.
“When I first arrived in the command, Feb. 22, 2016, one of the issues that confronted me was the fact that there was no parameter Fence, Public Enlightenment Hall, toilets, well and culvert to enable officers/visitors drive into the compound, “ he disclosed.
Ikeh-Akabogu averred, “what remains now is the Perimeter fence, which we expect the Plateau APC Chairman, Mr. Latep Dabang to mobilize all invited guests to make it a reality.“
