PLATEAU State government has said that it would continue to pursue peace and peaceful co-existence among the citizens of the state in view of its strategic importance to the development and well-being of the people of the state.
The state Governor, Somon Lalong stated this when the President AVC, Edward Schmidt, a German Faith based organization paid him a courtesy call at Government House, Rayfield, Jos, Thursday.
The Governor who was represented by his Deputy, Prof. Sonni Tyoden, said peace has been the central focus of his administration hence a bold step was taken to established the Peace Building Agency and has done well in the restoration of Peace among different ethnic and religious groups in the state.
The Governor while assuring the organization of government willingness to work closely with it, said it was government’s desire to entrench peace not only in the state but the country at large.
Lalong reiterated that government will do all within its power to secure the lives and property of its citizens noting that a situation where people will be divided along religious line was not healthy.
Earlier, President AVc Nehemiah Edward Schmidt had disclosed that the organization was providing humanitarian service. Schmidt who also disclosed that they were on a solidarity visit to the state, said the organization was active in several countries and expressed the desire to partner with the Plateau State government through the Peace Building Agency in order to promote peace.
In a related development, Governor Simon Lalong has urged citizens in the state not see peace making as the responsibility of the government alone but also a collective resolve of the people to live in peace and harmony with one another.
The Governor made the call when Director Relief West Africa of the Samaritan Purse, a faith based organization Francis Norton paid him a visit at Government House, Rayfield, Jos Thursday.
The Governor who was represented by his Deputy, Prof. Sonni Tyoden appreciated the organization for coming to the state to render humanitarian service especially to the Internally Displaced Persons and said the organization’s vision was in line with biblical injunction of providing help to the needy.
Lalong said Plateau has received it’s fair share of problems posed by the security challenges and called on the organization to formalize its relationship with the government for further interaction.
Director West Africa of the Samaritan Purse said, he was in Nigeria to assess the condition of living in the IDP camps and present some relief materials to support them.
He further disclosed that the organization provides relief materials to several countries faced by disaster and conflicts.
