It is no news that worldwide, a lot of countries have implemented “lockdown protocols” to contain the spread of the Corona Virus since it’s mode of transmission is from human to human.
A follower of Game of Thrones the series that held a lot of us spellbound may remember Bronn’s comment during the siege of Kingslanding by Stannis Baratheon. The conversation started with Lord Varys complimenting the Gold cloak’s performance in the “marked drop in thievery” and Bronn’s response was “Me and the lads rounded up all the known thieves”.
His reasons were enlightening. In his words, “Have you ever been in a city under siege? See it’s not the fighting that kills most people; it’s the starving. Foods worth more than gold. Noble ladies sell their diamonds for a sack of potatoes. Things get bad enough, the poor start eating each other. The thieves, they love a siege. Soon as the gates are sealed, they steal all the food. By the time it’s all over, they’re the richest men in town.”
Technically, the corona virus has us under siege, and all the thieves know that there’s ample supply of food stocked at home.
The reports from states like Lagos about the rise in thievery despite the lockdown is alarming and a cause for concern for every honest person. We must not let down our guards, and we charge the security officers to be alert to their task and respond timeously to calls for help.
It is understandable that hunger can drive even the noblest person to commit ignoble acts, and as such we call on the government to make provisions for food during the time of the lockdown at subsidized rates, and to ensure that some people don’t inflate the prices of food.
We must all be proactive in times like this; stay safe from Covid19, stay safe from thieves, and stay at home.
